The Phyllis J. Washington College of Education and Human Sciences shapes professional practices that contribute to the development of human potential. Research in teaching and learning across the spectrum of campus-based, hybrid, and online learning, with a focus on higher education as well as P-12, is key to fulfilling the College's mission.

About the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education & Human Sciences:
Preparation of teachers began at UM in 1900 when faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Education taught courses in Theory and Practice of Education and the History of Education in a second-floor classroom of University Hall. Graduate degrees in education, the Master of Arts in education and Master of Education, were established in 1917. Education joined law, pharmacy, journalism, forestry, music, and business as professional schools in 1930, offering undergraduate and graduate course work for teachers, administrators, and school counselors. The Doctor of Education, the first doctoral degree offered on the Missoula campus, was established in 1955. In 2009, the School of Education became the College of Education and Human Sciences.

The College is currently in a period of transition due to a series of campus-wide reorganizations. From 2008-2018, the College comprised five academic departments: Communicative Sciences & Disorders, Counselor Education, Teaching & Learning, Educational Leadership, and Health & Human Performance. Going forward, the departments of Communicative Sciences & Disorders and Health & Human Performance will move from the College of Education & Human Sciences to the College of Health Professions & Biomedical Sciences. The departments of Educational Leadership and Teaching & Learning, along with the renamed department of Counseling, will remain within the College.

In addition to its academic departments, the College maintains specialty units, including the Montana Digital Academy, the National Native Children's Trauma Center, UM Safe Schools Center, and the Learning and Belonging (LAB) Preschool.

The College is also undergoing a physical transformation due to a generous $10 million gift from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, which is funding a substantial addition to the Phyllis J. Washington Education Center. In conjunction with a $5 million gift from the Lund Trust, the addition will provide 35,000 square feet of instructional and collaborative space, including: the 500-seat Ali Lund Instructional auditorium, the largest on campus; clinical labs for the Counseling Department; new spaces for the Montana Digital Academy; and two additional Learning and Belonging Preschool classrooms with observation rooms, seminar spaces, an outdoor play yard and a unique inspiration lab.

We seek a Dean with an established record of creative and effective leadership to guide the College as it reorients around its core mission of training teachers, counselors, and educational leaders to serve the state of Montana, the Rocky Mountain region, and beyond. The successful candidate will need to understand the issues facing a state with Montana's unique geography and demographics, and must be skilled in working with diverse groups, problem-solving, and conflict management. Position Details:
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
Salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Work with College stakeholders to develop a new strategic vision as the College transitions from five academic units to three;

  • Promote and encourage faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship, research, outreach and service through innovative strategies;

  • Establish positive relationships with the Montana educational community, local, state and federal agencies, and tribal leaders;

  • Build partnerships with funding entities and potential donors;

  • Advocate for students both inside and outside the University to support their professional success, including developing relationships with key employers;

  • Represent the College in interactions with other academic units within the multi-campus University of Montana and with the Montana University System;

  • Oversee effective fiscal and personnel management and collaboration, including the recruitment and retention of highly qualified and diverse staff, students, and faculty.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to student achievement and faculty development, effective interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the drive to advance the College through excellence in its academic, outreach, and research missions. They must have strong leadership capabilities and demonstrate the ability to set priorities and to challenge and inspire individuals to achieve strategic goals.

Specific qualifications include:

  • Terminal degree in an educational field with experience in an academic, public sector, or non-governmental setting and a record of scholarship meriting tenure as a full professor in one of the College's departments;

  • Evidence of professional distinction and national recognition in the candidate's field;

  • Commitment to excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate education;

  • Record of effective leadership and management with a commitment to ethics, openness, and diversity;

  • Demonstrated ability to foster cooperation, collaboration, and consensus building;

  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary educational issues, stakeholders, and range of potential solutions;

  • Effective communication skills and commitment to transparent budgeting and decision-making;

  • Commitment to student success and student-centered learning;

  • Experience in institutionalizing diversity in procedures and practices;

  • Commitment to national and state accreditation;

  • Aptitude for fundraising and building College resources.
