Department Summary
The Mathematics Department’s mission is to introduce students to mathematics as an important area of human thought, to help students appreciate the beauty and scope of mathematics, to give students the mathematical knowledge necessary to teach mathematics at the secondary or elementary level, to prepare students for careers in actuarial science, business, government, and industry, to serve the needs of students in fields, which rely on mathematics, and to prepare students for graduate studies in Mathematics and Statistics. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with optional concentrations in Pure Mathematics and Statistics, as well as minors in Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science. We also offer graduate programs leading to a Masters of Arts in Teaching Mathematics. The Mathematics Department is located in the new $100M Dana Mohler-Faria Center for Science and Mathematics, and in addition to serving approximately 300 majors, we provide a large number of courses for the general student population.

Essential Duties
The Department of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University seeks a qualified and committed one-year full-time temporary faculty member for the 2019 – 2020 academic year. The level of appointment (Instructor/Assistant Professor) depends on the highest degree held by the successful applicant, with a terminal degree being required for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor.

BSU faculty members teach 12 contact hours each semester. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses both within and beyond the mathematics major, ranging from introductory to more advanced, including courses for students majoring in education. One-year temporary faculty members also participate in committee work and in departmental curriculum development.

Courses may be offered on the main campus in Bridgewater or at satellite campuses in Attleboro and Yarmouth.

Required Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or Applied Math, or in Education with a concentration in one of these areas is required.

Some experience teaching mathematics is also required.

Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and service, as well as to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. They should also have an ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, the ability to work collaboratively, the ability to communicate effectively, evidence of scholarly activity, and a commitment to public higher education.

Preferred Qualifications
A PhD is preferred.
