Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Human Sciences/Family and Consumer Sciences, Food, Nutrition and Community Health Sciences or related area;

Minimum of Five Years’ teaching experience in higher education

Purpose of Job

Provide vision and leadership for the Department of Human Sciences and facilitate the department’s efforts to achieve excellence and increase prominence for faculty, staff and students.

Scope of Responsibilities

1.Establish and implement procedures within the university guidelines for the recruitment of new faculty;
2.Counsel and guide faculty encouraging outstanding teaching, research and outreach activities;
3.Promote faculty professional development;
4.Enforce faculty responsibilities and rights;
5.Conduct periodic appraisal for recommending reappointments, tenure, promotion and salary adjustment;
6.Foster research, scholarly activities and community outreach; and
7.Foster interpersonal and professional relations among department faculty.

1.Ensure that proper curricular and career advice is available to all students majoring and taking courses within the department;
2.Monitor students’ scholarship and progress towards degree attainment;
3.Response to student grievances and grade appeals; and
4.Coordinate active plans for recruitment and retention of students.

•Curriculum and Programs
1.Establish departmental mission statements, priorities, objectives that align with the university mission and that of the accrediting body;
2.Conduct periodic programmatic reviews to track the department’s progress on accreditation indicators;
3.Ensure program quality and accreditation standards are maintained;
4.Establish department policies in cooperation with faculty related to curriculum content and changes, instructional standards, evaluation methods, textbooks and course syllabi;
5.Plan and present course schedules;
6.Appoint faculty members to co-curricular responsibilities with recommended release time; and
7.Review syllabi to assure alignment and implementation of FCS Body of Knowledge within course content.

•Budgets and Instructional Resources
1.Report to the Dean for fiscal management of departmental accounts;
2.Manage departmental facilities and instructional resources;
3.Recommend faculty and staff salaries to the Dean of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences within the limits imposed by the university salary schedules;
4.Prepare, present, receive and administer the departmental budgets;
5.Handle responsibility for departmental liaison with university offices dealing with particular fiscal matters and activities;
6.Plan for long-range financing for special programs and activities;
7.Write and review funding proposals in cooperation with faculty;
8. Administrate and evaluate proposals or projects as the department’s chief administrator; and
9.Ensure all budgetary operations conform to institutional and governing board guidelines and policies.

•External Relations
1.Convey university policies, procedures and actions to the department;
2.Represent the department within the university and with off-campus organizations;
3.Present departmental policies, procedures and actions to the students; and
4.Work closely with alumni.

•Office Management
1.Administer departmental facilities; hiring, supervising and evaluating department staff, and establish the department office procedures;
2.Practice sound management procedures that demonstrate respect for personnel; and
3.Follow university protocol for handling grievances and departmental issues.

•Professional Development
1.Provide professional leadership and example in the department
2.Maintain and demonstrate competence in teaching, research and professional activities
3.Provide faculty and staff with professional development opportunities
4.Meet eligibility requirements for Associate or Full Professor Rank

1.Carry out other duties as assigned by Dean of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

Essential Job Functions

Requirements include Ph.D. in Human Sciences/Family and Consumer Sciences, Food, Nutrition and Community Health Sciences or a related area; a minimum of five years’ teaching experience in higher education, expertise in conducting research, as well as experience advising and supervising undergraduate students is desired. The Chairperson is expected to develop and maintain appropriate linkages with external agencies, institutions and organizations to facilitate optimum growth and development of the department. The incumbent must have knowledge of Mississippi State Licensure Guidelines for childcare facilities. A minimum of two years serving as a department chair or an equivalent administrative position in the business or nonprofit sector is highly desired.

The ability to lead a team of professional faculty and staff is paramount. The ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups, strong verbal and written communication skills, proven ability to work with departments across all levels of the University, ability to contribute to development and implementation of the university and campus strategic plan, strong commitment to follow through, provide support for continuous process improvement, ability to interact effectively with state and national leadership and organizations on behalf of the department, and delegation and follow up skills.
