Position Overview
The Geoscience Manager for the Digital Mapping and GIS Laboratory (DML) of the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is stationed at the Moscow campus of the University of Idaho reporting to the IGS Director. The position manages and oversees all aspects of the DML, leading the implementation and development of core capabilities of the lab, including the production of map products and publications and data management across a range of software and platforms.
The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the submission and management of grants in collaboration with the STATEMAP coordinator; including reviewing program announcements, contributing to proposals, tracking progress, managing the review process, and submitting deliverables.
The position supervises the DML staff, which includes GIS Analysts and Digital Cartographers, and assists the professional staff with GIS-related applications, graphics, and computer applications and advises and assists with the development and integration of new technologies, such as drones and other surveying and mapping techniques. Limited assistance with specialty software may be required.
Establishing or maintaining a research portfolio compatible with the position’s time commitments and with the IGS mandate and priorities is encouraged but not required.
Duties may include:
  • Supervising scientific/technical staff.
  • Providing technical revisions, effectively acting as principal map editor.
  • Interfacing with geologic staff on IGS research projects.
  • Overseeing Information Technology contractors to ensure continuity in the server functionalities.
  • Maintaining and purchasing of lab software and hardware.
  • Co-managing of the IGS website.
  • Day-to-day basic managing of Windows network domain and active directory
  • Advising the IGS director on technology needs.
  • Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work.
  • Making managerial decisions that directly affect the efficiency, cost, reputation and service quality of the department, program, or process.
  • Limited travel is required as needed to attend professional or state meetings and for visits to the IGS office in Boise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Two years of post-degree applied GIS work experience with geologic and geospatial data (Graduate teaching or research assistantships are not counted as applied work experience. Teaching experience at academic or professional level will be considered up to 1 year. Relevant postdoctoral fellowships will be considered up to 1.5 years).
  • Understanding of general geology, with emphasis on geologic mapping concepts and procedures.
  • Interpreting and analyzing geologic maps.
  • Using ESRI ArcGIS software applications.
  • Using computer software and applications for vector graphics and illustrations.
  • Supervising and managing technical staff.
  • Managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Managing and designing databases.
  • Managing PC computer networks and servers.
Required Education
  • Master’s Degree in Geology or Earth Sciences.

Required Other
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles.
  • Requires occasional overnight travel.
Additional Preferred
  • Ph.D. in Geology or closely related field with an emphasis in geospatial and GIS applications of geology.
  • GIS Certificate or equivalent.
  • Map publication experience including publishing maps and other publications using ArcMap/Pro and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Demonstrated work experience with overseeing IT contractors.
  • Working knowledge of SQL database scripting language.
  • Working knowledge of computer IT systems including MS Active Directory and managing local domains.
  • Proven and advanced knowledge/work experience with Python programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with teaching GIS and database skills to technical staff.
  • Applied GIS/geology work experience with a state or federal geologic survey.
  • Proven experience with conducting geologic mapping.
  • Proven working experience with Lidar applications in the field of geology.
  • Experience supervising geologists, GIS and digital cartographic staff.
  • Familiarity with the geology of Idaho.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.
