About the Department
The University of North Carolina System’s Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), in partnership with the US Small Business Administration, is the recognized, primary organization through which the state of North Carolina provides business counseling, management education, and technology development services to help the business community successfully meet challenges, manage change, and plan for the future.
Essential Job Duties
The primary duties of the Research Analyst include but are not limited to the following:
Small Business Research:
- Conduct secondary market research on behalf of our small business clients and business counseling staff using online databases, library resources, and primary resources, such as industry associations and experts.
- Administer online quarterly and annual surveys, such as the automated impact survey, client satisfaction survey, and others.
- Develop, administer and analyze an annual survey assessing small business client needs.
Special projects:
- Manage special projects and initiatives that develop internally or in response to SBTDC strategic partners.
- Present findings and recommendations internally and externally as needed.
- Gather, analyze and report data and trends on existing and emerging industries and small businesses.
- Gather relevant data and business information to inform strategic partners as needed.
- Gather data for SBTDC projects and products such as the Annual Report, Annual State of Small Business, and other inquiries as directed by the Market Research Services Director and the Executive Director.
MRS Tool Resource Specialist/Trainer:
- Consult with business counselors and respond to questions about secondary market research resources.
- Train business counselors and interns in the use of internet resources as a market research tool.
- Develop tools that can be used by business counselors and small business clients such as internet resource guides, tip sheets, and templates.
- Oversee maintenance of the Market Research Services portion of the website by updating relevant documents, reports, links, and other resources as necessary.
- Update and maintain SBTDC digital subscriptions and maintain relationships with university business librarians at all 16 UNC university campuses.
Other Responsibilities
Special projects as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of secondary market research, demographic, and census or labor market databases – what sources to use, the kinds of data available, and how that data can be used.
- Strong writing and organization skills, ability to present data and information in an attractive and effective manner, and strong effective verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of MS Excel (or similar software) and basic statistics and data interpretation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a team, but comfortable working alone.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s in business, entrepreneurship, economic development, city and regional planning, or related field preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience conducting business, economic, or related research projects.
- Knowledge of online survey methodologies.
- Knowledge of GIS mapping.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Strong knowledge of statistics and MS Excel.
