The Position
Start date of this assignment: Fall 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach courses in the Child Development/Early Childhood Education Department
- Develop and evaluate curricula appropriate to the different learning needs of students, as well as developing student and program learning outcomes
- Create a learning environment that promotes and stimulates learning for every student
- Use and stay abreast of emerging teaching techniques and technologies
- Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
- Serve as a member of department, division, college, and District committees
- Perform other professional duties as required by contract or divisional and institutional needs
- Collaborate with groups on and off campus on projects that support Child Development/Early Childhood Education majors
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a Master’s or above in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or above in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent (see below)
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications
Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Successful experience in teaching the full range of college child development/early childhood education courses
- A commitment to and proficiency in creating curricula and methods of delivery that reflect the highest industry standards and practices
- The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
- Experience in computer-based applications and emerging technologies for teaching child development/early childhood education courses
- Knowledge of the systems of regulations in California regarding the employment of early care and education professionals
- Experience or familiarity with student and program learning outcomes development and assessment for child development/early childhood education courses
- Experience in collaborating on college-wide and departmental activities to assess and improve student learning
- Experience working and collaborating with outside agencies and organizations
- Experience with proposal writing for educational grants and public funding
- Understanding of and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college, including the mission and values of Skyline College.
- The ability to use teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become critical thinkers and independent learners who demonstrate cultural sensitivity and understanding of interdisciplinary approaches
- Experience working in the field of early care and education as a teacher or administrator
- Experience within an early learning development program working directly with children 0-8 years old and their families
- Evidence of participation in ongoing professional development experiences
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Multilingual Spanish/English/Tagalog
- Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
- Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
- Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in child development/early childhood education
- Experience/expertise in working with high-school students and secondary institutions
- Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within child development/early childhood education courses and classrooms
- Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices
